Janus Layers in the TiSe2–TiS2 System

Abstract: Our experimental results indicate the formation of extended ordered S–Ti–Se layers (Janus layers) in the Ti(Se1–x S x )2 system. The presence of these layers is observed as a folding of the typical Fermi surface of TiS2 and TiSe2. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) allows us to observe these layers by a typical rotation of the moiré fringe images. Analysis of the dependence of the electromotive force of the electrochemical cell on the S:Se ratio, angle-resolved photoelectron spectrosco… Show more

“…Additionally, for some of the CrBr x I 3– x mixtures, more reflections appear at about d ≈ 3.45 Å. Several reasons seem possible to explain the appearance of these extra reflections, like (in)commensurate superstructures, , stacking faults, or the partial non-random distribution/clustering of the anions . However, with the currently available data, we can only speculate about their true origin.…”

“…Several reasons seem possible to explain the appearance of these extra reflections, like (in)commensurate superstructures, 31,32 stacking faults, 33 or the partial nonrandom distribution/clustering of the anions. 34 However, with the currently available data, we can only speculate about their true origin. For this reason, further investigation in this regard are necessary and may be addressed in a future publication.…”

“…On the other hand, the previously discovered formation of mesoscopic structural fragments (SF) (e.g., in the Cr x Ti 1−x Se 2 or TiSe x S 2−x solutions) could explain this unusual phenomenon. 13,14 The formation of SFs was also suggested for V x Ti 1−x Se 2 . 15 However, the question about the conjugation character of these SFs remains.…”

“…An amazing property is a huge difference in the kinetics of electrode processes in the solid solutions compared to the pure TiCh 2 and VCh 2 (Ch = S, Se) host compounds. , Because the Li atoms occupy the same crystallographic sites in the solid solutions as in the host compounds, it seems difficult to explain the origin of the difference in the diffusion mobility of Li in solid solutions. On the other hand, the previously discovered formation of mesoscopic structural fragments (SF) (e.g., in the Cr x Ti 1– x Se 2 or TiSe x S 2– x solutions) could explain this unusual phenomenon. , The formation of SFs was also suggested for V x Ti 1– x Se 2 . However, the question about the conjugation character of these SFs remains.…”

“…Not surprisingly, the journal received many excellent papers reporting detailed structure studies, with three making our list this year (Table ). The methods in each case were differentpowder X-ray diffraction and solid-state NMR spectroscopy for substitution of Cd in Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 , high resolution transmission electron microscopy with a suite of spectroscopies for the Ti(Se 1– x S x ) 2 system, and molecular dynamics for Li 6 PS 5 X argyrodites . In each case, the insights gained are anticipated to inform the application of these materials.…”
