Job Stress and Working Capacity among Fly-In-Fly-Out Workers in the Oil and Gas Extraction Industries in the Arctic

Abstract: (1) Background: the research purpose is to identify and describe the stress and working capacity dynamics of oil and gas fly-in-fly-out (FIFO) workers in the Arctic during the fly-in period using biochemical, psychophysiological and psychological methods with further analysis of the relationship between them using objective, subjective and projective indicators. (2) Methods: The research involved 70 oil and gas FIFO specialists in the Arctic. The study of stress and working capacity was carried out using bioch… Show more

“…To date, the question of the scope and choice of methods for studying functional states is debatable. As a rule, monitoring of a person’s functional state is carried out in a complex manner using two groups of methods [ 38 , 40 , 41 , 42 , 43 ]: instrumental psychophysiological methods, which are objective because they evaluate changes at the level of physiological systems (for example, heart rate variability and sensorimotor reactions); subjective psychological methods, which involve an assessment of the state at a subjective sensations level as well as a projective little-conscious assessment of the functional state. …”

“…Thus, an integrated approach to the assessment of functional states involves dynamic study of the characteristics of states using different methods. The use of a comprehensive assessment is especially in demand when studying the dynamics of a person’s functional state when working in the Arctic due to the specifics of northern stress (polar stress syndrome), when negative changes that occur can be recorded, but not realized at the subjective level [ 43 ].…”

“…In addition to the seven studies that found FIFO mental health to be worse based on a direct comparison with other populations or groups, fourteen studies also describe negative impacts of FIFO work on mental health in workers. One of these studies showed that stress levels of workers increased over the course of the roster while workers are on site, using saliva cortisol levels as an indicator in a longitudinal design (Korneeva & Simonova, 2020; n = 70). Complementing these findings, Carter (2008; n = 10) found FIFO workers to report depressive feelings in the time leading up to their return to work and during the first few days on site.…”
