John desmond bernal—Evangelist of science (1901–)

Abstract: A brief biographical sketch of J. D. Bernal, physicist and sociologist is presented. The sketch stresses the particular thread of Bernal's activities that relate to scientific communication and information science. Bernal is designated an evangelist because he felt science should be taken to the masses, to solve social ills. He was one of the first to emphasize the role of communication in promoting both science and its use to benefit mankind.
