Joint probability distribution of annual maximum storm peaks and amounts as represented by daily rainfalls

Abstract: A procedure is presented for using the bivariate normal distribution to describe the joint distribution of storm peaks (maximum rainfall intensities) and amounts which are mutually correlated. The Box-Cox transformation method is used to normalize original marginal distributions of storm peaks and amounts regardless of the original forms of these distributions. The transformation parameter is estimated using the maximum likelihood method. The joint cumulative distribution function, the conditional cumulative d… Show more

“…Then, Goel et al (1998) improved the normalization method, developing a two-step procedure by the Box-Cox formulas (Box & Cox, 1964). This approach was re-proposed by Yue (2000a) introducing the optimization of the likelihood function to assess the parameters of the Box-Cox transformation.…”

“…Correia (1987) obtained the joint distribution of flood peak and duration by using the partial duration series method on the basis of the assumptions that: (i) both flood peak and duration are exponentially distributed; and (ii) the conditional distribution of flood peak given flood duration is normal. Sackl and Bergmann (1987), Loganathan et al (1987), Chang et al (1994), Goel et al (1998), and Yue (1999Yue ( , 2000a used the bivariate normal distribution to represent the joint distributions of floods or storms. Yue (2000b) applied the bivariate lognormal distribution for describing the joint statistical properties of…”
