Joint speech codec parameter and channel decoding of parameter individual block codes (PIBC)

Abstract: In digital mobile speech traosmission usually the most important (class la) bits provided by the speech coding scheme are protected by a CRC for error detection. As a consequence all parameters spanned by the class l a bits have to be marked at the receiver either as reliable or as unreliable. In contrast to this somewhat coarse approach we propose the usage of what we call parameter individual block codes (PIBC) for the most important codec parameters. This allows joint speech codec parameter and PIBC decodin… Show more

“…Applications of this concept to non-iterative joint sourcechannel coding schemes can be found in [16,17]. The bit interleaver π scrambles the incoming frame x τ of data bits tox τ in a deterministic manner.…”

“…The benefits of the latter approach with Q ⋆ < 2 M ⋆ over the obvious choice Q ⋆ = 2 M ⋆ in case of channel errors have been analyzed in detail in [7]. Such an index assignment with Q ⋆ < 2 M ⋆ can be considered as a (potentially non-linear) block code with the binary representation of the quantizer level index {ξ } 2 , ξ = 0, ... Q ⋆ − 1, as input (see also [11,12] for non-iterative schemes). In case of an index assignment by a linear block code with generator matrix G Γ we get [8] x…”

“…The family of JSCD schemes often relies on exploiting the residual redundancy in the source-coded bit stream. Fingscheidt and Vary [9] and Fingscheidt et al [10] proposed soft-bit source decoding (SBSD) to exploit the natural residual redundancy of the source-coded bit stream for improving the convergence of iterative source-channel decoding (ISCD) [11], [12]. However, only moderate residual redundancy is left in the sourcecoded bit stream when using advanced state-of-the-art coding techniques.…”
