Biodiversitas 23: 2342-2357. Balikpapan Bay is rich in biodiversity and natural beauty that present unique opportunities for the developing ecotourism industry in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. This study aimed to identify biodiversity hotspots with potential as ecotourism attractions. Four field surveys by boat, each survey taking between 10 to 22 hours duration, tracked the river and tidal flow through the Bay, recording highlights of biodiversity at 19 defined observation points. The study results recorded observations on five species listed in the IUCN protected species classification, namely: Lesser Adjutant Stork (Leptoptilos javanicus) - classified as a Vulnerable species; Proboscis Monkey (Nasalis larvatus), Irrawaddy Dolphin (Orcaella brevirostris) and Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas) - classified as Endangered species; and the Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) - classified as Critically Endangered. In addition, details were recorded of a unique variant of the mangrove species Rhizophora apiculata, with leaves that have a vibrant yellow color instead of the usual green. Combined with great views, including at night when there are enchanting displays of Fireflies (Lampyridae) on several riverbanks, the biodiversity of the waterways results in Balikpapan Bay having great potential as an ecotourism destination. Therefore, this study provides useful input to relevant agencies charged with responsibility for conserving and managing the natural resources of the Bay for the benefit of communities who stand to gain economically from developing this ecotourism potential.

The cultural heritage of Gunung Penanggungan has the potential to become a space for education for sustainable development. But it has not been optimally utilized by formal schools. This study aims to construct a learning model that can contribute to realizing the SDGs through education for sustainable development by utilizing the potential that exists in Mount Penanggungan. Design-based research is used in the development of this outdoor learning model. There are three stages of development: 1) analysis and exploration; 2) design and construction; and 3) evaluation and reflection. The subject of this study was the development of a one-day outdoor learning model involving two experts for qualitative product validation. Research data collection methods are adjusted to the research objectives, including: 1) literature studies, journals, proceedings, and relevant research books; 2) expert review; and 3) a validation sheet of the learning model draft.The data analysis used in this study is a qualitative-verifiable data analysis strategy. The results of this study show the components of the outdoor learning model, which consist of: 1) impact; 2) syntax; 3) the role of the teacher; 4) a support system; and 5) the principles of learning, have been worth testing. The outdoor learning model developed is considered to be in conformity with the objectives of ESD. School support, teacher competence and technical preparation are key to successful learning. The advantage of this model lies in the process of exploration, collaboration and reflection carried out directly in an outdoor class.

This book provides a collection of articles resulting from the International Conference on History, Social Sciences, and Education (ICHSE), which was held on 11 September 2021. The Department of History of Malang State University choose "Embracing New Perspectives in History, Social Sciences, and Education" as the main topic, and elaborates on five subthemes: 1) new trends in historical research; 2) formulation of new perspectives in history, social sciences, and education; 3) transdisciplinary research in history, social sciences, and education; 4) innovations in historical and social science learning during pandemics; 5) New ideas in the research and practice of social sciences and education. This seminar was open to international academics.This book presents new perspectives on methodology, methods, theory, and themes on history, social sciences, and education research from various perspectives on methodology and historiography. Now, history is not only about politics, economy and military, but also about environment, social, education, culinary, and so on. This book will be useful for students, historians, and the general public, in recording the development of Indonesian historical writing perspectives.
