Jugular Venous Flow Quantification Using Doppler Sonography

Abstract: A consensus on venous flow quantification using echo spectral Doppler sonography is lacking. Doppler sonography data from 83 healthy individuals were examined using manually traced transverse cross-sectional area and diameter-derived cross-sectional area obtained in longitudinal view measurements of the internal jugular vein. Time-averaged velocity over a 4-s interval was obtained in the longitudinal plane using manual tracing of the waveform. Manual and computer-generated blood flow volume calculations were a… Show more

“…Furthermore, the limitations of venous Doppler blood flow assessments are substantially greater than arterial flow measures and are elsewhere comprehensively discussed. [45] Fingolimod, a disease-modifying therapy for MS, can cause changes of the heart rate (bradycardia) and atrioventricular block, however these symptoms usually subside during the first month of treatment or when the treatment is discontinued, and only a few patients were treated with this drug in the present study. [46] Finally, the study utilized an exclusion criteria for patients with MS that received corticosteroid infusions 30 days before the study entry since it can additionally cause perturbations within the catecholamine levels that would result in changes of autonomic functioning.…”

“…However, different methods and veins make direct comparison impossible for the following reasons. First, we used MRI to quantify the flow rates and the spectral analyses to quantify the respiratory and cardiac modulations, while the cited study [ 2 ] used ultrasound, with operator-dependent measures [ 36 ] in the time domain. Second, we investigated different vessels, which is another source of difference.…”

“…Total CABF was determined using an echo-color Doppler (Biosound MyLab 25 Gold; Esaote) 7.5-10 MHz transducer as described elsewhere [17,23]. An ultrasonography technologist blinded to the patient characteristics applied hypoallergenic transmission gel on the neck area and placed the head in a natural forward position.…”
