Jurassic and Cretaceous palaeogeography and stratigraphic comparisons in the North Greenland-Svalbard region

Abstract: We present sedimentological comparisons and stratigraphical correlations of the Jurassic and Cretaceous epicontinental shelf deposits of Svalbard and updated descriptions of the shallow‐marine North Greenland sediments of East Peary Land and Kronprins Christians Land (Kilen). The Callovian to Volgian Agardhfjellet Formation of Svalbard is correlated to the lower part of the Ladegårdsåen Formation on East Peary Land, and to the Birkelund Fjeld, Splitbæk, and Kuglelejet formations of Kronprins Christian Land (Ki… Show more

“…The Wandel Sea Basin was probably subdivided into several fault-bounded subbasins in the Cretaceous that were increasingly controlled by strike-slip forces (pull-apart basins) Dypvik et al 2002). The Danmarkshavn Basin shows a relatively symmetrical basin configuration in the northern part and an eastwards-tilted half-graben against the Danmarkshavn Ridge in the south (Figs 12a -c).…”

“…The succession is thicker, stratigraphically more complete and generally composed of deeper-water facies at Kilen as compared to eastern Peary Land Dypvik et al, 2002). Lower Cretaceous (Aptian-Albian) marine deposits are mainly preserved at Kilen with small down-faulted outliers in the northwest part of the basin .…”

“…To simplify the 3D model, restoration focuses on the main faults ( Fig. 2; Table 1) and a regionally recognisable restoration was carried out in the software Move 2014.2 from Midland Valley using the workflow described in Svennevig et al (2015) and the detailed 3D model and Svennevig et al (2016a); ages are from Håkansson et al (1993Håkansson et al ( , 1994a, Dypvik et al (2002) and Alsen et al (2017).
