Education's Autonomy as a Utopian Polysemic Possibility: Challenges and a Path Forward

“…Advocates of education's autonomy must also make clear that this is not a leftist project. While some motivation for this agenda stems from neoliberal policies and political exploitation and instrumentalization of education in the service of right-wing interests, 47 schools in which education is truly autonomous do not serve or promote any political or ideological cause -whether advocated by the right or the left. Today, instrumentalism of education is a political mechanism -and, accordingly, K-12 education is perceived as a tool -across the political spectrum, and it is adopted regardless of the political agenda held by the specific politician.…”
