“…Moreover, infiltration of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6 and IL-17, inflammatory mediators augment like COX-2 and 5-LOX, reduction of antiinflammatory factors such as IL-4 and IL-10, which have been positively related to RA, causes synovial inflammation and cartilage damage (Jing et al, 2019;Li et al, 2019c;Lin et al, 2013;Pan et al, 2017). In RA, TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6 and IL-17 play a decisive and synergistic role in synovial inflammation and cartilage damage (Jing et al, 2019;Yu et al, 2019;Saleem et al, 2020). In addition, the overproduction of TNF-α elevates the levels of IL-1β and IL-6, and generates matrix degrading enzymes (Jing et al, 2019).…”

“…IL-17 also plays a pivotal role in RA, which promotes the overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines and MMPs, as well as the activation of the osteoclasts and angiogenesis (Jing et al, 2019). Based on the above, therapeutic substances that particularly impede the production of TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6 and IL-17 distinguish a crucial target for RA treatment (Jing et al, 2019;Rui et al, 2019;Yu et al, 2019). IL-4 and IL-10 by contrast, are two pivotal anti-inflammatory cytokines, which also play an important role in regulating the levels of endogenous pro-inflammatory cytokines during RA (Jing et al, 2019;Saleem et al, 2020).…”

“…The increasing number of RA patients and their families are suffering a substantial burden related to socioeconomic costs, progressive disability, and even early death [ 2 ]. A series of continuously developing therapeutic solutions are used in clinical trials against RA, including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) of synthetic origin, and of biological origin [ 1 , 3 ]. However, the conventional drugs present low effectiveness and side effects that require the researchers to seek new therapeutic substitutes.…”

“…Kadsura heteroclita is a vine plant primarily distributed in the southwest part of China, has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as “Hai Feng Teng” or “Ji Xue Teng” for the treatment of menstrual irregularities and blood deficiencies [13], by activating the blood circulation, relieving pain, and eliminating dampness. In the “Hu Ping” and “Xue Feng” mountain areas of northwest Hunan province, the stems of K. heteroclita are used to treat traumatic injuries and rheumatoid arthritis by one of the Chinese ethnic minorities known as the Tujia people [14,15]. Traditionally they named the stems of K. heteroclita as “Xue Tong” which means “circulating the blood system”, which is used to treat blood related diseases [16].…”
