Kainic Acid‐Induced Dorsal and Ventral Hippocampal Seizures in Rats

Abstract: PLATFORM AND POSTER SESSIONSintracellular recordings. A Ca2+ spike was elicited by applying a depolarizing pulse (InA, 120ms) in the cell through the recording electrode under a blockadc of Na' and K+ channels using 1 p M tetrodotoxin and I 0mM tctraethylammonium added to the artificial CSF, respectivcly. Nicardipine (I-IOOnM), a Ca2+ channel blocker, was applicd to the bath. Results: Thirty-seven slices from I9 NER and 6 slices from 4 normal Wishr rats were used. There were no obvious changes in the resting m… Show more

“…The distinct lipidomic and genomic patterns between the dHC and vHC with acute seizure relate well with their distinct functions; the dHC performs primarily cognitive tasks, while the vHC relates to stress, emotion, and affect (72)(73)(74)(75)(76). In this regard, the exclusive change of all SM species in the dHC is also of note.…”

“…As was observed in the intact hippocampus, seizure susceptibility was markedly increased in the temporal pole of the hippocampus. In vivo, the septal hippocampus requires a greater number of electrical stimulations to produce seizures (Racine et al, 1977), and seizures produced in the temporal hippocampus result in behavioral changes and spread to neighboring brain regions, while seizures generated in the septal pole result only in immobilization (Akaike et al, 2001). When hippocampal slices were examined, temporal slices showed increased epileptogenicity when subjected to high K ϩ (Bragdon et al, 1986), electrical stimulation (Gilbert et al, 1985), and opiods (Lee et al, 1990).…”

“…In addition to distinct behavioral roles, diseases of the hippocampus have different effects on the DHC and VHC. Ventral hippocampus, and not the dorsal, is considered to be the site of initiation of seizures in temporal lobe epilepsy (Gilbert et al, 1985;Bragdon et al, 1986;Akaikea et al, 2001;Toyoda et al, 2013). In contrast, dorsal CA1 neurons are more prone to damage by ischemia (Ashton et al, 1989).…”
