Pada umumnya rumah tinggal masyarakat Desa Pagatan Besar memiliki pekarangan yang ditumbuhi atau ditanami berbagai jenis tumbuhan. Namun, tumbuhan itu lebih difungsikan sebagai penghias pekarangan atau sekedar penghasil buah dan tidak untuk sumber obat. Pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan masyarakat terkait dengan pemanfaatan tumbuhan di pekarangan sebagai obat. Rangkaian selengkapnya pengabdian kepada masyarakat terdiri atas persiapan, pelaksanaan (penyuluhan), dan evaluasi. Penyuluhan dilaksanakan secara kolaboratif oleh dua orang fasilitator yang dibantu mahasiswa pendidikan biologi. Subjeknya adalah 25 anggota masyarakat Desa Pagatan Besar yang terdiri atas pemuda yang tergabung dalam Karang Taruna dan para ibu anggota PKK. Peserta antusias mengikuti penyuluhan. Pengetahuan mereka tentang tumbuhan obat meningkat signifikan. Nilai tes pra-penyuluhan adalah 36,36 atau terkategori kurang, sedangkan pasca-penyuluhan mencapai 90.91 (terkategori sangat baik). Counseling In The Framework Of Increasing The Knowledge Of The Pagatan Besar Village Community About The Use Of Medicinal Plants In general, the houses of the people of Pagatan Besar Village have yards that are overgrown or planted with various types of plants. However, these plants functioned more as garden decorations or just as fruit producers and not as a source of medicine. This community service aims to increase community knowledge related to the use of plants in the yard as medicine. The complete series of community service consists of preparation, implementation (counseling), and evaluation. Counseling was carried out collaboratively by two facilitators who were assisted by biology education students. The subjects were 25 members of the Pagatan Besar Village community consisting of youths who were members of Karang Taruna and mothers who were members of the PKK. Participants enthusiastically participated in the counseling. Their knowledge of medicinal plants increased significantly. The pre-counseling test score was 36.36 or in the less category, while the post-counseling score was 90.91 (very good category).

Medicinal plants are all types of plants that are known to contain compounds that are useful and efficacious to prevent, alleviate or cure a disease. Rubiaceae is one of the flowering plant tribes. This study aims to determine the type of plant, how to use, and the value of ICS (Index Culture Significance) on plants of the Rubiaceae family in Tanjung Gusta Village, Sunggal District, Deli Serdang Regency, which was conducted in May - July 2022. The research method used a descriptive survey conducted by means of field surveys and interviews. The results showed that the types of plants of the Rubiaceae family used as traditional medicine in Tanjung Gusta village are noni (Morinda citrifolia L.), asoka flower (Ixora coccinea), gambier (Uncaria acida), quinine (Cinchona pubeschens), cat's claw (Uncaria tomentosa). How to use noni by squeezing the juice, for asoka flowers by brewing, for gambier by mashing, for quinine which is used is the skin, and for cat's claw by boiling. The highest ICS value is obtained from the noni plant (Morinda citrifolia L) with a value of 24 and the lowest ICS value is obtained from the Asoka plant (Ixora coccinea) and also the quinine plant (Cinchona pubeschens) which both have the lowest ICS value with a value of 12.
