Medicinal herb Bauhinia variegata L. is the main ingredient in "Gandmala Kandan Ras" (GKR) herbomineral medicine used in Ayurveda for the treatment of swelling, inflammation and tumors. This study aimed to isolate the anti-inflammatory compounds from the methanolic extract of aerial parts of Bauhinia variegata. Through bioassay-guided isolation, three known flavonoids, namely kaempferol, ombuin and quercetin were identified from methanolic extract of aerial parts of Bauhinia variega. The primary screening by protein denaturation method revealed a significant percentage of inhibition of protein denaturation of compounds kaempferol and quercetin. The anti-inflammatory assays against COX-1/2 enzymes showed significant anti-inflammatory activity of these two compounds, compared to the standard drug, indomethacin. Of which, quercetin as a potent non-selective inhibitor of COX1 and COX2 with IC 50 values of 172.05±4.29 and 220.62±9.13 nM, respectively; while kaempferol showed selective COX2 inhibition with the IC 50 of 154.86±5.60 nM. The results provided evidence that supports the Ayurvedic usage of Gandmala Kandan Ras formulation in the treatment of inflammation, which was attributed to the natural active kaempferol and quercetin. The results indicated that plant Bauhinia variegata could be considered as an excellent natural source of remedial medicine for inflammation.

The objective of the present study was to do qualitative evaluation of phytochemicals present in the flower buds of Bauhinia variegata that belongs to a family "Fabaceae' which is well known for its scented flowers. The young premature flower buds of the plant were subjected to analysis for its phytochemical constituents as fresh material. The fresh raw flower buds of the plant were macerated and subjected to hot percolation separately. The maceration was carried out for 72 hours with absolute alcohol. The hot percolation (Soxhelt extraction) was carried out in intervals, approximately for 40 hours). The shade dried flower buds were also underwent for maceration and hot percolation separately with absolute alcohol. The extracts were dried over rotary evaporated. After evaporation, the greenish pinkish colour gummy mass was obtained from the fresh flower bud extractions. The evaporated extracts of shade dried flower buds were of greenish gummy mass. Some of the extracts were of greenish yellow and greenish in colour. All evaporated extracts were dissolved and diluted in respective solvents for phytochemical analysis. The qualitative screening of analytical results showed the presence of alkaloids, reducing sugars, terpenoids, glycosides, tannins, flavonoids and carbohydrates in all the extractions. The tests for saponins revealed that this group was not present in any of the solvent extracts. Anthraquinones showed the presence in Flower A and Bud SA only while this group was not present in Flower B, Bud A and Bud B samples.

Nootropics herb constitutes of compounds that enhance cognitive performance by increasing mental functions memory, creativity, motivation, and attention, eventually causing individuals to be many alerts and focused. These nootropic herbs tend to enhance brain performances. To assess the awareness on nootropic herbs among dental students. A cross-sectional study was done with a self-administered questionnaire with 10 questions circulated among 100 dental students. The questionnaire assessed the awareness on pharmacological properties, traditional uses, medicinal uses and memory-enhancing function of the nootropic herbs from ayurvedic pharmacopoeia. The responses were recorded and analysed. 17% were aware of nootropic herbs.5% were aware of their pharmacological properties.3% were aware of traditional uses. 3 % aware of medicinal uses. 12%were aware of memory-enhancing function. The awareness of nootropic herbs usage in clinical practice among dental students was found to be low in this study. Our findings emphasize the importance of incorporating several educational and training programs to dental students to sensitize them to look for alternative and herbal medicines in the treatment of diseases.
