Emily Thomas's seminal book The Meaning of Travel has brought the philosophy of travel back into the public eye in recent years. Thomas has shown that the topic of travel can be approached from numerous different perspectives, ranging from the historical to the conceptual‐analytical, to the political or even social‐philosophical perspectives. This article introduces another perspective, which Thomas only indirectly addresses, namely the argumentation‐theoretical perspective. It is notable that contemporary philosophy of travel lacks the nineteenth‐century approach of using diagrams and maps to examine arguments for and against travel. Since this approach starts with Schopenhauer, we first introduce his argument maps, discuss their advantages and disadvantages, and argue that a modified version is suitable to visualize and analyze arguments for and against traveling as presented in Thomas's work.

The text seeks to reconstruct the dynamics of the evolution of European identity throughout the 18th century. Starting with two 16th and 17th century maps of Europe (popularized by Sebastian Münster and Willem Janszoon Blaeu), it analyses a wide range of works (compendia of history and geography, essays, satires, travel accounts) that focus on Europe and the Europeans, and which are implicitly or explicitly based on the travel literature of the time. From the discovery of an Imperial Europe to the discovery of the ‘national’ diversities of the European peoples, without forgetting the discovery of a Europe inhabited by ‘European savages’, the identitarian evolution that the analysis suggests points to a European identity that is doubly marked by mobility: marked by travel and the knowledge of the world provided by travel writing, which is the touchstone from which Europe seeks to define itself, and also marked by the perspectivism that travel introduces into the ways of seeing and being European.

This article shows that the methodology of Mills’ ‘Black Radical Kantianism’ (BRK) represents a major plot twist for Kant studies as well as contemporary political philosophy utilizing Kantian ideas. BRK is no mere upgrade of Kant’s or Kantian ideal theory for racial justice. Mills’ methodology requires us to posit both that the real Kant and establishment Kantianism have been racist, sexist and Eurocentric; and that only by first admitting and reckoning with the compatibility of white supremacy and liberal egalitarianism can we hope to radicalize Kant or Kantianism.
