Karst and World Heritage Status

Abstract: Trenutno vsebuje seznam svetovne dediščine okoli 50 kraških krajev, toda precej jih je bilo vpisanih v seznamu zaradi drugih, »nekraških« posebnosti. “…Many important karst manifestations have been exploited successfully for the purposes of tourism in the form of natural tourist attractions (also those privately operated), protected areas, geosites, UNESCO heritage sites, etc. for decades if not centuries [15,[19][20][21][22]. These localities are very numerous and have been included in the newly-formed global geoparks only occasionally.…”

“…Several lines of evidence are as follows. First, many karst features are of heritage value (geomorphological and "pure" speleological heritage) because these are either unusual and rare landforms or "windows" into the dynamic geological environment [15,[19][20][21]. Second, karst objects have been essential sites of nature-based tourism long before the very appearance of the idea of geological heritage and geotourism; for instance, many caves are open to excursions or attract amateur speleologists [15,22].…”

“…Furthermore, particularly numerous caves and geomorphologically remarkable scenic spots became attractions and provoked development of tourism (Hamilton-Smith 2007;Williams 2008b). An increasing demand for clean energy resources calls for intensive use of geothermal energy from karst systems (Liedl and Sauter 1998;Goldscheider et al 2010a).…”

“…The cave was designated a national heritage site in 1978 by the Brazilian National Institute for the preservation of the Artistic and Historic Heritage (IPH-AN), justified by the exceptional scenic value and scientific value offered by the location. Later, in 2007, was placed in the list of geological sites in Brazil (Boggiani et al 2007b), with the potential to be raised to world speleological heritage, cause it has the exceptional features of the landscape and established conservation guidelines, as described by Hamilton-Smith (2007).…”
