Karyologic and Heterosis Studies of the Artificial Inter- and Intraspecific Hybrids of Viola ×wittrockiana and Viola cornuta

An investigation was carried out to study the effect of foliar application GA3 on plant growth and quality attributes in Pansy (Viola × wittrockiana Gams.) during 2019-2020. The field experiment was laid out at randomized complete block design (RCBD). The 18 treatment combinations including 6 doses of GA3 i.e., 50, 100, 150, 200, 250 and 300 ppm were applied at 3 durations i.e., 30, 40 and 50 DAT along with a non-factorial control. Of them, GA3 @ 300 ppm at 40 DAT showed significant increment in plant height (34%), plant spread (32%), number of flowers per plant (25%), number of flowers per plot (25%), size of flowers (35%), flowering duration (25%), seed yield per plant (68%), seed yield per plot ( 68%) and seed yield per hectare ( 68%), number of seeds per capsule (48%), number of capsules per plant (38%) as compared to control checks whereas earliest flowering was observed due to GA3 @ 300 ppm when applied at 30 DAT.

The garden pansy (Viola × wittrockiana) is a large hybrid flower and most popular for its abundant flower colors. The flower colors of 12 pansy accessions were measured by using colorimeter and the pigments distribution within their petal cells were investigated. The result indicated a vast majority of the visual color of flower was consistent with the result surveyed by colorimeter in pansy. The pigments were mainly distributed in the upper and dorsal epidermal cells and most of them show the similar colors to those measured using colorimeter. The red pigment was found to be distributed in the visual blue petals and yellowish brown or khaki pigment in visual white petals. The results suggested the flower color of pansy can be objectively and accurately measured with colorimeter, and investigating pigment color and distribution in petals can help understanding pansy flower color better.

In the current studies, heavy metal tolerance level, accumulation efficiency and sexual reproduction were determined in Viola × wittrockiana, a non-metallophytic ornamental cultivar in comparison to V. tricolor, a metallophyte, after zinc (Zn) or lead (Pb) treatment (0, 10, 100 and 1 000 ppm) in pot experiments. The seed germination frequency that was not reduced in comparison to the control, the effective Zn absorption from the soil and exclusion strategy for Pb, as well as the regular sexual reproduction of V. × wittrockiana treated with heavy metals all indicate the tolerance of this plant to heavy metals. The lack of a seed set under experimental conditions of V. × wittrockiana was due to the absence of pollinators, rather than the negative impact of heavy metals, as pollen viability and ovule development were normal under the treatments. The results indicate that V. × wittrockiana represents similar tolerance to Viola metallophytes and could be considered as a good material for the reclamation of polluted areas. The exceptional tolerance to heavy metals, the ability to initiate new generations in heavy-metal-burdened soil, which are additionally coupled with the unique beauty, make the garden pansy a good candidate to be potentially used in the future for phytoremediation purposes.
