Karyotype characterization and ZZ/ZW sex chromosome heteromorphism in two species of the catfish genus Ancistrus Kner, 1854 (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) from the Amazon basin

Abstract: We present karyotypic characteristics and report on the occurrence of ZZ/ZW sex chromosomes in Ancistrus ranunculus (rio Xingu) and Ancistrus sp. "Piagaçu" (rio Purus), of the Brazilian Amazon. Ancistrus ranunculus has a modal number of 2n=48 chromosomes, a fundamental number (FN) of 82 for both sexes, and the karyotypic formula was 20m+8sm+6st+14a for males and 19m+9sm+6st+14a for females. Ancistrus sp. "Piagaçu" presented 2n=52 chromosomes, FN= 78 for males and FN= 79 for females. The karyotypic formula was … Show more

“…Single NORs at interstitial position are putatively a primitive feature within Ancistrini, as proposed by Artoni & Bertollo (2001), Alves et al (2003), Mariotto et al (2004), Mariotto & Miyazawa (2006), de Oliveira et al (2006de Oliveira et al ( , 2007, Mariotto et al (2009), Mariotto et al (2011) and the present study. Nevertheless, NORs located at terminal position of chromosomes are observed in some species, as verified in Ancistrus n.sp.…”

“…Since species bearing multiple sex chromosomes ( de Oliveira et al, 2008), as reported in Amazon basin, and simple sex chromosome systems have already been identified in Ancistrus (Mariotto et al, 2004;Mariotto & Miyazawa, 2006;de Oliveira et al, 2006de Oliveira et al, , 2007Mariotto, 2009) according to each locality, a fixed pattern of sex heterogamety cannot be defined, thereby confirming the recurrence and the homoplasic character of sex chromosomes in the tribe Ancistrini.…”

“…However, as new studies were performed in Ancistrini it was pointed out that the chromosomal diversity go beyond the previously supposition for this group. Indeed, the Ancistrini tribe is characterized by a chromosomal diversification, especially in the genus Ancistrus where distinct karyotypic structures indicate a probable species complex (Mariotto & Miyazawa, 2006), besides the occurrence of simple and multiple sex chromosome systems (Mariotto et al, 2004;Mariotto & Miyazawa, 2006;de Oliveira et al, 2007de Oliveira et al, , 2008, as well as simple or multiple and interstitial or terminal NOR systems (Alves et al, 2003;Mariotto et al, 2004;Souza et al, 2004;Mariotto & Miyazawa, 2006;de Oliveira et al, 2006).…”

“…In most species of Neotropical fishes with sex chromosomes, addition and/or deletion of heterochromatin or chromosomal rearrangements such as pericentric inversions or Robertsonian translocations involving one of the homologous chromosomes have been suggested important mechanisms in the origin of simple sex chromosome systems (Almeida-Toledo et al, 2000). Multiple sex chromosome systems are those where chromosomal rearrangements are cited as the fundamental mechanisms in the origin of the complex systems (Oliveira et al, 2007). In the case of H. cf.…”
