Dermatophytosis is a mycotic disease of the skin that is resistant to treatment. The aim of this study was to investigate the treatment efficacy of a novel antimicrobial agent, Hypochlorous Acid (HOCL), on dermatophytosis of cats and dogs, in comparison with Ketaconazole. In this study, a total of 76 animals (26 cats and 50 dogs) without any disease other than skin fungal infection after clinical, hematological, biochemical, microscopic and Wood's lamp examinations were used. Subjects were randomly assigned to two equal treatment groups within their own species as HOCL: HP and Ketaconazole: KT. Naked eye inspection results were collected on the 8th, 11th and 15th days of all patients. The study was terminated on the 15th day by collecting the Wood's lamp and microscopic examination data together with the last inspection finding. Findings were analyzed statistically with chi-square and CART (Classification and Regression Tree) algorithm test. Inspection results of the treatment groups exhibited significant recovery over time (day 8, 11 and 15) for both species (p0.05). According to the microscopic examination results, a significant statistical difference was observed between the HP and KT groups (p0.05). As a result, it was concluded that HOCl has an effect on dermatophytosis of cat and dogs, although not as much as Ketaconazole, but further studies are needed to reveal the results more clearly.

It is important for public health to monitor infectious agents in domestic animals. This study aimed to detect of bacterial and fungal agents in the skin of various domestic animals. A total of 263 skin samples were collected during 2021-2023 from 147 cats, 102 dogs, 10 cows, 3 rabbits, and 1 iguana. Bacteriological examination indicated that 37.6% of the samples were positive. S. pseudintermedius (35.4%) was the dominant bacteria in all isolates, followed by P. aeruginosa (23.2%). S. aureus was isolated from one rabbit sample and P. aeruginosa from one iguana sample. These findings add to the limited number of studies on these species. As a result of mycological examinations, 61.6% of all samples were identified as positive by cultural examination. Saprophytes were found in 41.1% of all samples, specifically A. niger (30.6%), Penicillium spp. (28.7%), A. fumigatus (16.7%), Alternaria spp. (15.7%), Mucor spp. (4.6%), and A. flavus (3.7%). The high prevalence of saprophytes was correlated with environmental contamination. Dermatophytes were isolated in 20.5% of all samples. M. canis was the dominant dermatophyte (64.8%), followed by T. mentagrophytes (31.5%) and M. ferrugineum (3.7%). The higher prevalence of dermatophytosis in spring (51.9%), was associated with rainy seasonal conditions in Turkey.

Dermatofitozlar sıcak, nemli koşullar ve hijyenik olmayan ortamlarda çoğalarak deri, kıl, tırnak gibi yapıları etkileyen dermatofitlerden kaynaklanan yüzeysel mantar enfeksiyonlarıdır. Deri ve tırnakta görülen mantar enfeksiyonlarının dünya nüfusunun %20-25’ini etkilediği bilinmektedir. Kedi ve köpeklerde yaygın şekilde görülen dermatofit türü öncelikli olarak Microsporium canis (M. canis)’tir, ayrıca M. nanum, M. gypseum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes (T. mentagrophytes), T. terrestre gibi başka türlerin de taşıyıcılarıdır. Sağlıklı evcil kedi ve köpekler enfeksiyon rezervuarıdır ve genellikle M. canis’in taşıyıcılarıdır. Kontamine ortam ve hayvanlarla temas halinde olan insanlara bulaşarak deride ve baş bölgesinde mantar lezyonlarına neden olurlar. Vücutta herhangi bir hastalık, yetersiz beslenme, yüksek sıcaklık, nem, deride meydana gelen travma, ektoparazitlere bağlı deri hasarı, aşırı kalabalık ve hijyenik olmayan ortamlar dermatofitoz oluşturan risk faktörleridir. Belirtilen bilgiler ışığında bu derleme kapsamında başta veteriner hekimler olmak üzere, hayvancılıkla uğraşanlar, kedi-köpek sahipleri, veteriner teknisyenler ve mandıra işçileri de dahil riskli meslek grupları hakkında özlü bilgiler verildi. Türkiye ve Dünya’da son yıllara ait hayvanlar ve insanlardaki dermatofitoz prevalans verileri sunularak, hastalığın önemi ve mevcut durumuna değinildi. Ayrıca hastalığa ait klinik bulgular, tanı, sağaltım seçenekleri ile koruma ve kontrol yöntemlerine yönelik en son bilimsel kaynaklara dayanan özlü bilgiler sunuldu.
