Keeping Patients Safe

Abstract: In this column, the authors discuss the issue of antibiotic resistance, components of a program of antibiotic stewardship, and the role of the nurse executive in leading and supporting these efforts.

“…The daily practices needed for responsible antimicrobial use within an institution are inherently multidisciplinary, with different healthcare workers capable of contributing in a variety of ways (Table 1) [27]. Although the core AMS team in hospitals should include specialists in infectious diseases, clinical microbiology and pharmacists, involving other specialties and professions in leadership positions can send a strong signal throughout the institution about the importance of responsible antimicrobial management [21,28,29].
