Despite a large number of studies in personalizing e-learning systems, only a few sufficiently cover the impact of personalization on university emails. Either universities impose the use of university email or students are reluctant to use it. For instance, It was found that at King Abdulaziz University only 23% of students were using the university email to communicate regularly, unlike the faculty members, who showed an 80% commitment. However, this paper attempts to investigate the effect of applying different personalized systems on the university email and whether using adaptation and adaptability techniques in the university email will cover the huge gap between the university and its members. Specifically, frameworks were built to evaluate the efficiency, frequency of error occurrence, effectiveness, and user satisfaction in each experiment. We focused on testing the usability of personalized email against the existing university email and then evaluate which approach (adaptive, adaptable, or mixed-initiative) is more favorable to personalize the university email. These were conducted and evaluated using 40 subjects. Interestingly, results show that subjects with personalized emails were most efficient and satisfied as well as errors were reduced by 42%. Furthermore, significant differences were found between the three approaches (adaptive, adaptable, and mixed-initiative), and the adaptive approach was the most preferred by the respondents. A set of empirically derived guidelines was also discussed as a basis for developing a suitable university email structure.

Web Services have been steadily gaining maturity as their adoption in the software industry grew. Accordingly, metric suites for assessing different quality attributes of Web Service artifacts have been proposed recently -e.g., for services interfaces in WSDL (Web Service Description Language). Like any other software artifact, WSDL documents have several inherent attributes (e.g., size or complexity) that can be measured. We present an approach to prevent a high complexity on services interfaces (WSDLs), to ease consumers to reason about services' offered functionality. Mostly, WSDLs are automatically derived from object-oriented (OO) source code, with a likely impact on complexity. Thereby, we study the statistical relationships between a recent metric suite of service interface complexity (proposed by Baski & Misra) and the well-known Chidamber & Kemerer's OO metric suite (applied to service implementations), on a data-set of 154 real-world services. First, a theoretical validation of Baski & Misra's suite (using Weyuker's properties) is presented, to prove the ability to measure complexity in WSDL documents. Then, after finding high correlation between both metric suites, we have conducted a series of experiments to analyze how certain refactorings on services' source codes prior to derive WSDLs might reduce complexity. In this way, our approach exploits OO metrics as development-time indicators, to guide software developers towards obtaining less complex service interfaces.

Web services provide a uniform framework to achieve a high level of interaction between distributed heterogeneous software systems and data resources shared over the Internet. Producing a well-designed web service is significant because it leads to a more understandable service and a higher level of interaction and leads to effective software maintainability. However, web service is suffering from a poor design problem named anti-patterns. Analysis of the literature returned a plethora of studies on anti-patterns that caused difficulties for developers to synthesize and summarized the possible types of anti-patterns and further comprehend each of them. Due to this limitation, this paper aims to provide organized literature on the types of anti-patterns found in web services. A scoping review was conducted by searching scholarly documents, analyzing, and classified them based on their anti-pattern types. The review provided in this paper could be used as a guide for developers to identify the antipatterns that could be found in web services.
