Keishibukuryogan Reduces Renal Injury in the Early Stage of Renal Failure in the Remnant Kidney Model

Abstract: The effects of keishibukuryogan on the early stage of progressive renal failure were examined in rats subjected to 5/6 nephrectomy. Keishibukuryogan, one of the traditional herbal formulations, was given orally at a dose of 1% (w/w) and 3% (w/w) in chow. Administration of keishibukuryogan was started at 1 week after 5/6 nephrectomy and was continued for 4 weeks. At the end of the experiment, Azan staining did not reveal any severe histological changes in the kidneys of the nephrectomized rats. On the other han… Show more

“…We next evaluated the possible mechanism for the renoprotective effects observed in RK + SF rats. Previous studies documented the roles of several cytokines that are responsible for renal inflammation and fibrosis in RK model 23,24,3133 . Therefore, we quantitative analyzed the gene expression of these cytokines in RK and RK + SF rats.…”

“…Ninjinyoeito has also been reported to suppress cancer metastasis (16). On the other hand, Keishibukuryogan has been shown to suppress renal fibrosis, which is caused by TGF-β-induced EMT (17). Despite the inhibitory activity of CC extract, the possibility can not be excluded that other herbal medicines might play a role in concert with CC extract, because of the harmonization effects among various herbal medicines (11,12).…”

“…by ablation of approximately 2/3 of the left kidney and then removal of the right kidney by ligation of renal artery, vein, and ureter ten days later. As an adaptive response to the renal ablation, the remnant kidney underwent hypertrophy, resulting in proteinuria, azotemia, and renal fibrosis with glomerular sclerosis and tubulointerstitial scarring over time [ 7 ].…”
