Abstract. While Indonesian novels have been explored for their depiction of ecological crises, there has yet to be a detailed examination of how these narratives reflect the ensuing socio-ecological systems. This study investigates the portrayal of socio-ecological systems within Indonesian novels in the context of ecological crises. Employing qualitative methods and content analysis, this research utilizes the updated socio-ecological systems framework proposed by McGinnis and Ostrom (2014). The findings reveal various aspects of the crises represented, including forest destruction, forest fires, air pollution, animal extinction, and the degradation of natural reserves. Furthermore, the ecological crisis that has occurred actually gives rise to a socio-ecological system that represents the internal relationships among the resource system, government system, resource unit, and actors, and is influenced by external factors such as the social, economic, and political settings, and related ecosystems. Additionally, this representation of the socio-ecological system provides insights into the conditions of the ecological crisis in Indonesia, particularly in palm oil plantations and nature reserves.Keywords: Ecological Crisis, Social-Ecological System, Indonesian Novels, Ecocriticism

Nickel mining operations can significantly impact groundwater quality by releasing metallic contaminants. This study aims to quantify metal concentrations in groundwater quality changes at nickel mining sites in Pomalaa District, Kolaka Regency. The study employs the Wenner configuration geoelectric technique and Pollution Index (IP) to assess metal pollution in groundwater. Geoelectric data, log borings, laboratory results of groundwater quality, and regional geological maps were used in the study. Water sample analysis detected toxic elements such as Aluminum, Iron, Manganese, Zinc, Copper, Hexavalent Chromium, Nickel, Cobalt, Cadmium, and Lead. Geoelectric analysis shows that groundwater is generally found within fracture zones of igneous and metamorphic rocks at depths between 2 and 100 meters. The Pollution Index (IP) categorized the groundwater samples as moderately contaminated, failing to meet drinking water quality standards. The analysis suggests that the groundwater originates from fissures in ultramafic rock, with significant metal contamination detected in groundwater wells. Metal content in groundwater occurs due to the interaction between rocks and groundwater. The study results also show that the groundwater pollution index is in the light category. However, the levels of heavy metals mean that groundwater cannot be directly used to fulfill needs. Further processing of groundwater is necessary so that groundwater can be used.

On the brink of social resistance: local community perceptions of mining company operating permits in East Luwu, Indonesia

The presence of a mining company in an area affects the living conditions of the surrounding community from an environmental, social, and economic perspective. This research aims to contribute to the literature on social perceptions concerning mining company operations by assessing the local societies’ rate of rejection or acceptance of a mining company’s extension of operating permit, along with reasons that justify the decision. We conducted semi-structured interviews with seven interest groups in four sub-districts in East Luwu Regency, comprising 79 participants. This research uses a combination of quantitative data collection and in-depth qualitative interviews to strengthen the sources’ reasons for providing answers. The results show a high rejection rate expressed by communities living in the sub-districts where mining companies operate, alongside a strong preference for extending operating permits for sites that are of greater distance to the smelters. If the business permit is ultimately transferred to the existing company, it may exacerbate community tensions and resistance. In that case, the local community wants several priority improvements, namely, increasing the number of workers working in the factory, further boosting economic growth and empowerment programs carried out in affected areas, and improving post-mining environmental management. Therefore, this study contributes to the discourse of local community perceptions in mining areas, which may affect mining operations in the future.
