Abstract: Ketone bodies are short chain fatty acids produced by the liver during periods of limited glucose availability, such as during fasting or low carbohydrate feeding. Recent studies have highlighted important non-metabolic functions of the most abundant ketone body, β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB).
