Keystroke Logging in Writing Research

Abstract: Keystroke logging has become instrumental in identifying writing strategies and understanding cognitive processes. Recent technological advances have refined logging efficiency and analytical outputs. While keystroke logging allows for ecological data collection, it is often difficult to connect the fine grain of logging data to the underlying cognitive processes. Multiple methodologies are useful to offset these difficulties. In this article we explore the complementarity of the keystroke logging program Inpu… Show more

“…He was told that he had approximately one hour to write, but he was free to decide when to finish. Each writing session was recorded by the keystroke-logging software Inputlog and the screen-recording software Camtasia (see Leijten and Van Waes 2013 for more information about Inputlog). Immediately after finishing each text, Henry was interviewed about his writing experience in the respective session.…”

“…Four data collection instruments were used to ensure triangulation: a) revision product analysis based on the changes made in the final version (for the product part of the research), b) think-aloud protocols, c) the keystroke logging software Inputlog (Leijten and Van Waes 2006;2013), and d) short retrospective interviews (for the process part of the research).…”
