The genus Cavariella is distinguished from other Macrosiphini genera (Aphididae, Aphidinae) because it has a supra-caudal process on abdominal tergite VIII which possesses two setae distally. It is Holarctic in distribution, and half of its species are Asian. The Chinese fauna of this genus, 17 species, have been restudied, morphologically and through DNA barcodes. As a result: Cavariella hidaensis Takahashi is transferred to Elatobium; Cavariella sculptura Qiao & Xu, sp. nov. is described from specimens collected on Torilis and Cryptotaenia (Apiaceae); Cavariella cessana Zhang, Chen, Zhong & Li, syn. nov. and Cavariella largispiracula Zhang, Chen, Zhong & Li, syn. nov. are respectively junior synonyms of Cavariella aquatica (Gillette & Bragg) and Cavariella sapporoensis Takahashi; Cavariella gilgiana Zhang, Chen, Zhong & Li and Cavariella lhasana Zhang are confirmed as valid species and complete descriptions are provided; Cavariella bhutanensis Chakrabarti & Das, Cavariella nigra Basu, Cavariella pastinacae (Linnaeus), and Cavariella pustula Essig are recorded for the first time from China. Additionally, keys for species of Cavariella known in China are provided and modifications to the key by Blackman and Eastop of aphid species on Angelica (Aphids on World’s Plants) are presented.

Three types of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) have been discovered so far in the persistent emission of the most luminous neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries, the Z sources : D10È60 Hz horizontalbranch and D6È20 Hz normal/Ñaring-branch oscillations and D200È1200 Hz kilohertz QPOs, which usually occur in pairs. Here we study the horizontal-branch oscillations and the two simultaneous kilohertz QPOs, which were discovered using the Rossi X-Ray T iming Explorer, comparing their properties in Ðve Z sources with the predictions of the magnetospheric beat-frequency and Lense-Thirring precession models. We Ðnd that the variation of the horizontal-branch oscillation frequency with accretion rate predicted by the magnetospheric beat-frequency model for a purely dipolar stellar magnetic Ðeld and a radiation-pressureÈdominated inner accretion disk is consistent with the observed variation. The model predicts a universal relation between the horizontal-branch oscillation, stellar spin, and upper kilohertz QPO frequencies that agrees with the data on Ðve Z sources. The model implies that the neutron stars in the Z sources are near magnetic spin equilibrium, that their magnetic Ðeld strengths are D109È1010 G, and that the critical fastness parameter for these sources is If the frequency of the upper kilo-Z0.8. hertz QPO is an orbital frequency in the accretion disk, the magnetospheric beat-frequency model requires that a small fraction of the gas in the disk does not couple strongly to the stellar magnetic Ðeld at 3È4 stellar radii but instead drifts slowly inward in nearly circular orbits until it is within a few kilometers of the neutron star surface. The Lense-Thirring precession model is consistent with the observed magnitudes of the horizontal-branch oscillation frequencies only if the moments of inertia of the neutron stars in the Z sources are D4È5 times larger than the largest values predicted by realistic neutron star equations of state. If instead the moments of inertia of neutron stars have the size expected and their spin frequencies in the Z sources are approximately equal to the frequency separation of the kilohertz QPOs, Lense-Thirring precession can account for the magnitudes of the horizontal-branch oscillation frequencies only if the fundamental frequency of the horizontal-branch oscillation is at least 4 times the precession frequency. We argue that the change in the slope of the correlation between the frequency of the horizontal-branch oscillation and the frequency of the upper kilohertz QPO, when the latter is greater than 850 Hz, is directly related to the varying frequency separation of the kilohertz QPOs.

We report a broadband investigation of the Z-type neutron star (NS) low mass X-ray binary (LMXB) GX 349+2 using AstroSat and NICER. AstroSat observed the source exhibiting large scale variability in its normal branch (NB) /flaring branch (FB) vertex and flaring branch (FB) and a moderate evolution during NICER observations. The power spectra exhibit very low-frequency noise (VLFN) and low-frequency noise (LFN)/flaring branch noise (FBN), described by a power law and an evolving Lorentzian. We investigate the energy dependence of variability components and their correlation with the spectral state to probe their origin. The joint spectra of GX 349+2 are modeled by two thermal and one non-thermal component. The source moves along the Z track, with the increasing accretion rate, further heating of the NS boundary layer, and increasing temperature/radius of the brightened hotspot at the disc-boundary layer interface/NS surface. A power law well represents the hard non-thermal coronal emission. As predicted by the gravitational redshift, we find a correlation between the line energy detected in NICER spectra and the inner disc radius with the Spearman rank correlation coefficient of 1. Using this correlation, we demonstrate the potential of a method to constrain the accreting compact object properties, including evolving continuum and line spectroscopy. We report the first detection of hard lag providing evidence of the VLFN originating from the accretion disc in NS LMXBs, representing fluctuation of propagation through the disc.
