Kinematic pharyngeal transit times in myopathy: Evaluation for dysphagia

Abstract: Measurement of kinematic pharyngeal transit times, a new videofluoroscopy technique, provides useful quantitative data to supplement the qualitative data previously available from videofluoroscopy swallowing studies. Kinematic pharyngeal transit times have not previously been reported for subjects with myopathy. This study demonstrates the use of quantitative kinematic pharyngeal transit times for dysphagia evaluation in 15 patients with myopathy. The successful treatment of dysphagia by cricopharyngeal myotom… Show more

“…Reduced pharyngeal contractility can result in insufficient pharyngeal bolus clearance [ 139 ]. Consequently, myositis patients often show pharyngeal residue after swallowing [ 7 , 27 , 29 , 31 , 33 , 44 , 58 , 59 , 60 , 61 , 65 , 66 , 67 , 69 , 71 , 73 , 74 , 75 , 76 , 77 , 78 , 79 , 80 , 83 , 84 , 86 , 87 , 91 , 93 , 96 , 100 , 101 , 103 , 104 , 106 , 111 , 112 , 115 ]. These can impact on swallowing safety and ultimately cause aspiration, which is a frequently reported finding [ 33 , 78 , 81 , 86 ].…”

“…It includes delay or absence of food transfer and mistransfer to the airway [1]. Various techniques have been used to assess swallowing, both functionally and morphologically, such as videofluorography (VF), electromyography, deglutition pressure examination, ultrasonography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and cone-beam computed tomography (CT) [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]. Although VF is the most common and effective method [1], accurately determining the reference points and investigating quantitatively is difficult because of variability in patients' positioning in each examination.…”
