Kinesthetic pathways

Abstract: We report on an ethnographic study of the work practice and discovery process in a systems biology lab, and outline a tabletop visualization that was developed based on this study, in collaboration with the researchers. The feedback from the researchers on the current prototype is presented, and ongoing revisions are outlined. We conclude with some of the challenges involved in developing such tangible visualizations for discovery.

“…We chose two existing projects, Active Pathways [31,32] and Sparse Tangibles [7], and one new project, Tangible mtDNA, to demonstrate how Actibles can be used different application scenarios. All three applications make use of Actibles in combination with an interactive tabletop.…”

“…The project has gone through several iterations. The first version, called Kinesthetic Pathways [32], focused on simulation alone, employing passive tangibles to manipulate parameters in the tabletop simulation (e.g., a dial for changing parameter values on the table) and to display different kinds of output charts (e.g., time-based graphs and error charts).…”

“…Almost all current tangibles provide visual feedback on an integrated display screen when available [3,13,15,16] or on an external display, such as an interactive wall [8,24] and interactive tabletops [23,29]. Some have also explored lights [11] and other forms of feedback, such as haptic [20][21][22] and auditory [4].…”
