Kinetic and Isothermal Investigations on the Use of Low Cost Coconut Fiber-Polyaniline Composites for the Removal of Chromium from Wastewater

Abstract: Pollution due to various heavy metals is increasing at an alarming rate. Removal of hexavalent chromium from the environment is a significant and challenging issue due to its toxic effects on the ecosystem. Development of a low-cost adsorbent with better adsorption efficiency is presently required. In this study, waste coconut fibers (CF) were used to prepare its composite with polyaniline (PANI) via in-situ oxidation. The obtained composites with varying loading of PANI (15, 25, 50, and 75%w/w) were character… Show more

“…It can also be noted that the removal % remained almost the same when the adsorbent was increased to 2 mg/mL from 1 mg/mL, which indicates agglomeration of the adsorbent particles. Similar results have been reported by Jha et al [ 54 ]. From all the results, the optimal dosage was determined to be 1 mg/mL and was kept the same for all the studies.…”

“…Moreover, for a constant amount of adsorbate, increasing dose of adsorbent provides enhanced surface area [ 46 ]. Similar findings have also been reported by other workers on different types of adsorbate–adsorbent systems [ 47 , 48 ]. However, in the current study, the change in adsoprption of the adsorbent is insignificant and gradually lowered in some instances above the adsorbent dose of 0.3 g. Therefore, the optimum amount of adsorbent used was 0.3 g.

“…In recent years, researchers have also made efforts to find a sustainable, environmentally friendly solution to the pressing problem of waste treatment. Methods such as advanced oxidation processes, adsorption, ion exchange, reverse osmosis, ozonation, interfacial solar evaporation, coagulation, and precipitation are used to treat various pollutants [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 ]. All reported methods (except adsorption) are either associated with high operating costs or are inherently complex; therefore, these methods are not economically viable [ 10 ].…”
