Kinetic and mechanistic studies on the block copolymerization of methyl methacrylate initiated by Ce4+-poly (ethylene glycol) redox system

Abstract: SYNOPSISThe kinetic and mechanistic features of tetravalent cerium-poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG, molecular weight 6000) redox couple initiated block copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) have been investigated in aqueous acidic medium in the temperature range 30-50ЊC. A plausible reaction scheme has been derived and suitable kinetic expressions have been evaluated based on these observations. It has been concluded that by varying the temperature and concentration of the components of the redox system, it… Show more

“…Cerium(IV) salts have been extensively used to initiate graft copolymerization of vinyl monomers on various natural and synthetic polymers. One of the applications of this technique is to cover a given support with covalently bound neutral polymer chains in order to permanently reduce interactions with material in solution such as proteins , or calcium . It seems that no attempts have been yet made to use Ce(IV)-initiated polymerization for modifying the surface of synthetic nonporous polymers in order to improve their biocompatibility.…”
