Kinetic Modeling and Isotherm Studies for Copper(II) Adsorption onto Palm Oil Boiler Mill Fly Ash (POFA) as a Natural Low-Cost Adsorbent

Abstract: Adsorption characteristics of palm oil boiler mill fly ash (POFA) for the removal of Cu(II) from aqueous solution were investigated using batch adsorption studies. The effects of relevant parameters such as contact time, solution pH, adsorbent dosage, and initial concentration of copper were examined. Fundamental batch investigations indicated that 90% of the Cu(II) was removed in the first 30 min, achieving equilibration after only 270 min of agitation. The Cu(II) uptake mechanism is particularly pH-and conce… Show more

“…According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the maximum allowable concentrations of Cu 2+ and Cd 2+ , two of the most common heavy metal ions in drinking water, are 1.5 mg/L and 0.005 mg/L, respectively (Wang et al 2017a). Effective removal of toxic heavy metal ions from aqua sources is important for the environment and public health protection (Aziz et al 2014;Hu et al 2017). Numerous technologies have been developed to remove heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions, such as adsorption, ion exchange, precipitation, membrane separation, electrochemical treatment, etc.…”

“…The POMFAW containing NiO, SiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , CaO, etc. has also obtained by another researchers [13,14,15], but the difference in composition is caused by various operating systems in palm oil mills and raw material sources. The characteristics absorption band of treated POMFAW is presented by FTIR analysis in Fig.…”

“…The preferential adsorption favours H 3 O + over Cu 2+ ions. As the solution pH value increases, the electrostatic repulsion between the negatively charged sites on the surface of BASG-w and cations decreases, adding to the fact that fewer H 3 O + ions are available to compete with Cu 2+ ions for the active sites [ 33 ].…”
