In this study, kinetics of biological carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorous removal from a synthetic wastewater in an integrated rotating biological contactoractivated sludge system was investigated. The experimental data obtained from varying four significant independent factors viz., hydraulic retention time, chemical oxygen demand for nitrogen to phosphorus ratio, internal recirculation from aerobic to anoxic zone and disks rotating speed were used for the process kinetic modeling. In order to obtain the bioprocess kinetic coefficients, Monod, firstorder and Stover-Kincannon models were employed. As a result, Monod and Stover-Kincannon models were found to be the appropriate models to describe the bioprocess in the rotating biological contactor-activated sludge system as the determination coefficient for the first-order model obtained less than 0.79. According to the Monod model, growth yield, microbial decay rate, maximum specific biomass growth rate, and half-velocity constant coefficients were found to be 0.712 g VSS/g COD, 0.008/d, 5.54/d and 55 mg COD/L, respectively. From Stover-Kincannon model, the maximum total substrate removal rate constant and half-velocity constant were determined as 15. 2, 10.98, 12.05 g/L d and 14.78, 7.11, 6.97 mg/L for chemical oxygen demand, nitrogen and phosphorus removal, respectively. The kinetic parameters determined in this study can be used to improve the design and operation of the biological contactor-activated sludge system in full scale.

A model to describe the performance of the UASB reactor. Abstract A dynamic model to describe the performance of the Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactor was developed. It includes dispersion, advection, and reaction terms, as well as the resistances through which the substrate passes before its biotransformation. The UASB reactor is viewed as several continuous stirred tank reactors connected in series. The good agreement between experimental and simulated results shows that the model is able to predict the performance of the UASB reactor (i.e. substrate concentration, biomass concentration, granule size, and height of the sludge bed).

A start-up study for biohydrogen production from palm oil mill effluent (POME) is carried out in a pilot-scale up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket fixed-film reactor (UASFF). A substrate with a chemical oxygen demand (COD) of 30 g L −1 is used, starting with molasses solution for 30 days and followed by a 10% v/v increment of POME/molasses ratio. At 100% POME, a hydrogen content of 80%, hydrogen production rate of 36 L H 2 per day, and maximum COD removal of 48.7% are achieved. Bio-kinetic coefficients of Monod, first-order, Grau second-order, and Stover-Kincannon kinetic models are calculated to describe the performance of the system. The steady-state data with 100% POME shows that Monod and Stover-Kincannon models with bio-kinetic coefficients of half-velocity constant (K s) of 6000 mg COD L −1 , microbial decay rate (K d) of 0.0015 per day, growth yield constant (Y) of 0.786 mg volatile suspended solids (VSS)/mg COD, specific biomass growth rate (max) of 0.568 per day, and substrate consumption rate of (U max) 3.98 g/L day could be considered as superior models with correlation coefficients (R 2) of 0.918 and 0.989, respectively, compared to first-order and Grau's second-order models with coefficients of K 1 1.08 per day, R 2 0.739, and K 2s 1.69 per day, a = 7.0 per day, b = 0.847.
