Kinetics and Adsorption Studies of Mercury and Lead by Ceria Nanoparticles Entrapped in Tamarind Powder

Abstract: In this study, novel adsorbent ceria nanoparticles (CeNPs) entrapped in tamarind powder (Tm@CeNPs) were efficiently utilized for the simultaneous adsorption of aqueous mercury [Hg(II)] and aqueous lead [Pb(II)]. Surface interactions between the adsorbent and heavy metal ions play an important role in the adsorption process, and the surface morphology can significantly improve the adsorption capacity of the adsorbent. The Langmuir adsorption capacity of Tm@CeNPs for Hg(II) and Pb(II) was found to be 200 and 142… Show more

“…Consequently, these interactions raise concerns regarding their general and occupational health and safety profiles. Different NPs have been reported to have outstanding capacity for metals adsorption from aqueous or organic solutions [ 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 ], among them, cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO 2 NPs) and titanium dioxide (TiO 2 NPs) nanoparticles. TiO 2 NPs hold immense potential, such as chemical stability and photocatalytic efficiency, and are commonly used in a variety of fields, from medicine and pharmacology to bioremediation [ 9 , 10 ].…”

“…As HMs have long half-life and are non-biodegradable in the environment, they have been considered as toxic substances for the public health and environment even at ppb levels (4,6,7). These toxic metals affect cardiovascular systems, immune, digestive system, and the normal functioning of neurological via accumulation in the soft tissues and living organisms (8,9). In fact, some of them like Cu and Zn are proposed as carcinogens by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) (7,10).…”

“…Likewise, sodium ion surpasses Li-ion conductivities having very high conductivities and in the Na-super ionic electrode in the NASICON family. Previously, various metal oxide materials have been synthesized by using chemical precipitation, hydrothermal, and sol-gel method which has been used for the detoxification of water [20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28], but these nanomaterials were not utilized for the conduction of electricity. Hence, some other metal oxides have been synthesized and applied, such as NASICON based materials which were used as conductor materials.…”
