Abstract:T h e ionization o f I -p h e n y l e t h y l chloride in anhydrous acetone is efficiently p r o m o t e d b y HgClz a n d CoClz.T h e reactions measured by loss of o p t i c a l a c t i v i t y a n d radiochlorine exchange provide results w h i c h are consist e n t with t h e i n t e r v e n t i o n of i o n -p a i r intermediates. In t h e case w i t h HgClz t h e kinetics are complicated a n d are consistent w i t h t h e presence of two molecules of HgC12.
