Kinetics and Mechanistic Studies on Oxidation of Levocarnitine by Bromamine‐T in HCl Medium Catalyzed by Ru(III)

Abstract: A kinetic study on RuCl 3 -catalysed oxidation of levocarnitine (LC) by sodium N-bromo-p-toluenesulphonamide or bromamine-T (BAT) has been carried out in HCl medium at 303 K. e reaction rate shows a rst order dependence on [BAT] 0 and fractional order with respect to both [LC] 0 and [H + ]. Addition of the reaction product, p-toluenesulphonamide, retards the rate. e addition of RuCl 3 and chloride ions to the reaction mixture shows an increase in the rate of the reaction. e dielectric effect is positive. … Show more

“…Ramachandrappa and co-workers performed a kinetic study of the oxidation of levocarnitine (LC) by bromamine-T using RuCl 3 as the catalyst in HCl at 303 K (Scheme 71 ). 98 The reaction was found to exhibit first-order kinetics with respect to [BAT] 0 , whereas a fractional dependence on both [LC] 0 and [H + ] was recorded. A detailed study of the reaction kinetics established the reaction stoichiometry as 1:1.…”

“…Contemporary studies using BAT mainly concern the examination of drugs oxidation mechanisms in biological systems (drugs used, for instance, in the treatment of allergies and diabetes) [6][7][8][9][10][11]. Also, research work is conducted on the possibility of obtaining aziridine compounds from olefins (used, among other things, in the production of pharmaceuticals and optically active compounds) using BAT as a source of nitrogen [12][13][14][15].…”

“…Redox reactions have been the subject of detailed mechanistic and kinetic studies as they are most commonly encountered in chemical analysis. Investigation reveals that oxidation of compounds using other oxidants have been carried out [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]. Organic haloamines resemble hypohalites in their oxidative behaviour, but are more stable than hypohalites and are developing rapidly as oxidants, disinfectants and antiseptics.…”
