Kinetics and Rate Constants of Reactions Leading to Hydration of and in Gaseous Oxygen, Argon, and Helium Containing Traces of Water

Abstract: The rate constants for the forward and reverse components of gas phase reactions:were measured with a pulsed electron beam, time resolved detection high pressure mass spectrometer at 300 OK. O,, Ar, and He at pressures from 1-7 Torr were used as third gas M. The forward reactions were found to be third order and the reverse reactions second order. Establishment of the equilibria could also be observed.

“…By pulsing the source of ions, high pressure mass spectrometry also has been used to obtain kinetic information. 81,82 Obtaining rate data from these types of measurements is complicated by the occurrence of parallel and sequential reactions, as well as diffusive loss of ions to the walls of the apparatus. Therefore, quantitative results are obtained on assumed reactions whose rate constants are determined by curve fitting to the experimental arrival time spectrum of reactant and product ions.…”

“…The kinetics of hydration of the N02-ion have been studied by Puckett and Lineberger96,113 and by Payzant et al,114 and the kf and kr values obtained are included in Table VIII for the reactions N02-+ H20 + M ^N02-(H20) + M (23) with He, Ar, NO, and 02 as third body.…”
