Kinetics of Fe–Ti Oxide Re-equilibration in Magmatic Systems: Implications for Thermo-oxybarometry

Abstract: The combined Fe-Ti oxide geothermometry and oxygen barometry is an important tool in petrology and volcanology. However, its appropriate application to natural magmatic systems is still challenged by poorly constrained kinetics of the re-equilibration processes between magnetite, ilmenite, melt and other magmatic phases. In this study, we experimentally investigated how fast Fe-Ti oxides can re-equilibrate and how fast their compositions can adapt to changing temperature and/or redox conditions. A series of eq… Show more

“…For samples BR-03, BR-07 and BR-06 the ilmenite-magnetite oxybarometer gives values between ΔFMQ -1 ± 0.4 and -1.8 ± 0.1 and low temperatures between 860ºC and 700ºC. Such low temperature must indicate that the ilmenitemagnetite pairs were reequilibrated during the cooling of the extrusive rocks and that they record the oxygen fugacity of the melt having probably already been degassed (Hou et al, 2020). Therefore, the values obtained for these samples were discarded.…”

“…Of particular concern for this study is the potential that subsolidus cooling may drive a change in fO 2 and variations in mineral chemistry in magmatic rocks (Roeder and Campbell, 1985;Lindsley and Frost, 1992;Birner et al, 2018;Hou et al, 2021).…”

“…1,5 Titanomagnetite and the intergrowth of ilmenite lamellae within magnetite have been extensively investigated, owing to their widespread distribution in different geological environments. [5][6][7] The importance of this Fe-Ti oxide system has long been recognized, its thermodynamic mechanism was established and widely applied as a thermaloxybarometer. 6,8 However, concentrations for trace elements in the ilmenite lamellae are poorly known.…”
