Kinetics of HbA1c, Glycated Albumin, and Fructosamine and Analysis of Their Weight Functions Against Preceding Plasma Glucose Level

Abstract: The levels of HbA1c, GA, and FA do not reflect the simple mean but reflect the weighted mean of the preceding plasma glucose level over a considerably longer period than was previously speculated.

“…In other words, glucose levels during the most recent 6 week period will have a greater influence on the A1c result compared to levels from the prior 6 weeks. 8 Thus, if the patient has experienced a recent acute change in glycemic control (i.e., treatment with glucocorticoids), the A1c value will be disproportionately affected by the most recent glucose levels. Table 1 shows the correlation between A1c and estimated average glucose.…”

“…It is measured with the automatic clinical chemistry analyzer currently used in the blood centers without any change in the testing process. Furthermore, GA is not affected by the contents of meals taken on the day of the measurement 5 , which suits the blood donation environment, because blood donors are encouraged to take some refreshment before or after donation to mitigate or prevent vasovagal reactions characterized by sudden decreases in blood pressure and heart rate.…”

“…Measurement of GA has been commonly advocated in human patients with diabetes and can also provide an index of glycemic control for 1-3 weeks. 3,9,10 The working hypothesis of the current study was that GA could be substituted for fructosamine in the diagnosis and treatment monitoring of diabetic dogs because GA is a main constituent of fructosamine.…”
