Kinetics of the degradation of n-butyl benzyl phthalate using O3/UV, direct photolysis, direct ozonation and UV effects

Abstract: The aim of this work is to study the degradation kinetics of the endocrine disruptor benzyl butyl phthalate using ozone and UV radiation. The model comprises four parallel subsystems that are identified and isolated: (1) direct photolysis, (2) direct ozonation in the absence of hydroxyl radicals, (3) complete ozonation (direct + indirect oxidation), and (4) ozone + UV. To determine the nature of ozone attacks and the influence of ·OH radicals on O3 activity, two sets of experiments were performed: (i) conventi… Show more

“…This process was reported to be effective in the degradation of some dyes [26,27]. UV is also extensively used in combination with O 3 [28]. In one study, besides acting as a catalyst, UV radiation also contributed to the enhanced removal of total organic carbon (TOC) and chemical oxygen demand (COD), in a decolorization experiment of Reactive Blue 19 [29].…”

“…All stock solutions and working standard solutions were stored at −20°C. All prepared solutions and rat biological matrices were handled and kept in light-resistant containers throughout the study to prevent the photocatalytic degradation of BBP [41,42].…”

“…Fresh rat biological matrices were collected from at least five individual rats. To prevent the enzymatic degradation of BBP, formic acid in distilled water was immediately mixed with rat biological matrices (final composition of formic acid 0.5 %) [42,43]. QC samples were prepared by spiking the standard working solutions to the blank rat biological matrices of plasma, urine, and 10 different tissues of kidney, liver, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, spleen, brain, testis, thyroid, and fat.…”

“…Ozonation processes are especially effective since they may involve two major active species namely the molecular ozone and the hydroxyl radicals and both species can operate simultaneously [13]. The production of • OH radicals can be increased by the incorporation of UV radiation [14], H 2 O 2 [15] or increasing the pH [16]. It is necessary to highlight that both oxidizing species have very different behaviors.…”
