Kinetics of the Formation and Decay of Benzidine Mono Radical Cation in Aqueous Solution

Abstract: The oxidation of benzidine by Ce(IV); the oxoanions MnO4− and Cr2O72−; peroxides, namely potassium peroxomonosulfate (KHSO5), peroxodisulfate (S2O82−) and H2O2; and halogens viz., Cl2, Br2, and I2, to the benzidine mono radical cation (benzidine•+) and further oxidation to the benzidine diradical cation (+•benzidine•+) by the above-mentioned oxidants, except for Br2 and I2, were investigated by a stopped-flow technique. The kinetics of both reactions, the formation and decay of benzidine•+, were monitored by f… Show more

“…The position of λ max strongly correlates with the number of detached electrons and displays a redshift from 274 nm (in Bzd 0 ) to 378 nm (in Bzd •+ ) and, finally, to 429 nm (in Bzd 2+ ) during the oxidation. These results are in an excellent agreement with the available experimental data. ,,, The bathochromic shift is caused by the planarization of the nuclei and the formation of a uniform conjugated π system (a chromophore).…”

“…In particular, the B3LYP/6‐31G(d) method was used for geometry optimization of Bzd , Teb , and naphthidines . Also, a few papers present semi‐empirically calculated data regarding to the oxidation of aniline along with the pioneering work where the molecular orbital (MO) energies of Bzd and N,N,N′,N′ ‐tetramethylbenzidine are calculated by the extended Hückel method . Moreover, the optical properties of BBC are quite poorly studied from the theoretical point of view.…”

“…Another condition for the structure screening is the energy restrictions. As it has been stated in the Introduction section, there are experimental evidences for the Bzd and Teb oxidation with the subsequent formation of the Bzd 2+ and Teb 2+ dications . We have calculated the adiabatic single (AIE1) and double (AIE2) ionization energies of the Bzd 2+ and Teb 2+ dications in order to obtain clear DFT descriptors, which allow a simple estimation of the energy cutoff level.…”
