Abstract: This paper examines some issues related to the production and marketing of kiwi in Arunachal Pradesh, the largest producer of kiwis in India. It contributes 56.5% of the total 8.5 thousand tons of kiwis produced in the country. India imports 75% of its domestic demand for fresh kiwis and, therefore, there is huge scope to upscale kiwi production in northeastern states in general and Arunachal Pradesh in particular. However, developing an efficient value chain is a challenge because of several infrastructural a… Show more

“…Table 22 shows that among marketing problem lack of vehicles, refrigerator vans was ranked first in Ilam while Sandakpur Rural Municipality perceived poor road connectivity as the first ranked problem. This study is supported by study made by (Mani et al, 2018) in Kiwifruit in the state of Arunachal Pradesh where the constraints faced by the farmers were marketing constraints. “…Developing an efficient value chain in Arunachal Pradesh is a challenge because of numerous institutional and infrastructural constraints like lack of research, extension support, non-availability of reliable data on production, pitiable credit support, lack of organized marketing and post-harvest infrastructure etc. as indicated by Mani et al [9]. Majority (95.31%) of the kiwifruit growers voiced their financial constraints as the main constraints.…”

“…LVCs' upgrading can, therefore, be an alternative development model to reduce poverty and economic marginalization for numerous smallholders and women in developing countries (Lie et al, 2012;Markelova et al, 2009). Though there are few emerging studies on LVCs, it is still important to understand the organizational structures of LVCs to suggest possible upgrading strategies that will improve smallholders' and women's performance (Lie et al, 2012;Mani et al, 2018). This is particularly important for neglected smallholders in dualistic agrifood systems in which LVCs function parallel to MVCs.…”

While these aforementioned studies focused on non-dualistic sectors, studies such asMani et al, (2018) andChagomoka et al, (2013) have analyzed LVCs in dualistic sectors. The latter studies however profiled actors and segments in such a way that there are no clear distinctions between LVCs and MVCs.…”
