KL-9 Analysis of Material Response to Processing Conditions : A Case Study of Aluminum Extrusion

Abstract

in erder to fu11y characterize the rnetal flow of art aluminum billet during the extrusion process, severar modeling and simulation techniques can be emp{oyed.Material flew and strain disnibution may be studied by a visioplasticity technique using modeling materials. Laboratory scale extrusion tests on engineering materials can be perfbrmed to determine the influence ofprocessing pararrieters. The mierostructural response of the material to processing varial)les may be obtained ffom a therrnal mechanical simulator, which aceuratery reproduces thermal cycles ef erctrusion. Tlte ctystallographic evolutien of grains during themtalmechanical treatment inc]uding the effect of die design and surface deforTnation conditions can be investigated via Electron BackscatterDifffaction (EBSD). Final]y, the strqss and ternperatLue gradients aan be calcu]pm with Finite Element Modeling (FEM). The combination of these techniques, all applied to different aspects of the extrusion pTocess, can give a fu11 acoount of how extrusicm press conditiens affect rnaterial fiow and microstmcture evolution.
