Knowledge and intake of folic acid to prevent neural tube defects among pregnant women in urban China: a cross-sectional study

Abstract: Background The prevalence of neural tube defects (NTDs) in China declined during 2000–2017 with periconceptional folic acid (FA) supplementation, which is effective in reducing the risk of birth defects. We aimed to assess the knowledge and actual use of FA among Chinese pregnant women and to explore factors associated with FA use before pregnancy. Methods All data were collected in face-to-face interviews during health visits among pregnant women.… Show more

“…It is known that there is a close relationship between folic acid deficiency and neural tube defects (NTD), produced as a consequence of a failure in neural tube fusion during days 21 and 27 of embryonic life. They can manifest in the brain in the form of anencephaly or encephalocele (incompatible with life) or in the spinal column as spina bifida [4,9,11,[95][96][97].…”

“…A survey conducted in Korea showed that 65.6% of surveyed women had heard of FA before pregnancy, and 26.4% reported on the pre-conceptional use of FA [ 9 ]. 9 In some other studies, the knowledge regarding FA need varied from 34.0% to over 67% [ 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 ]. However, despite their knowledge, few women, as low as 9.4% in some studies to as much as 46.3% in others, in their childbearing age take FA supplements [ 11 , 13 , 15 ].…”
