Objective: The objectives of this study include performing pharmaceutical care-related research and documenting regarding drug-related problems in the surgery department. Further, these types of studies may bring consciousness to both physicians and patients regarding drug use in surgery. Methods: A Prospective interventional study was conducted in a general surgery hospital. The prescriptions were analyzed for the use of inappropriateness of drugs using the classification for drug-related problems. Results: Out of 100 cases, 62 patients were observed with drug-related problems. The number of antibiotics prescribed was 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 in 8, 11, 12, 32, 18, 18, 1 cases respectively. A significant increase in the outcome of antibiotic rationality and cases adhered to guidelines was seen in November compared to October and somewhat decreased in December due to some limitations. The overall study states that prescribing has a more important cause of Drug-related problems compared to dispensing and the use of the drug. Conclusion: Drug-related problems have to be acknowledged as a very important contributing treatment factor for the best health care outcome. Our study shows the importance of clinical pharmacists in every hospital for identifying and resolving drug-related problems and medication errors.

Health Seeking Behavior Towards Minor Ailments Among University Students in Malaysia

Objective: This study was conducted to identify the types of minor ailments encountered by university students in Malaysia and the action taken in response to these ailments. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on undergraduate students from the various faculties in a major private and a public university in Malaysia. A researcher stationed at different areas of the universities to recruit respondents. If the student agreed to participate, he/she would sign a consent form and then self-filled a structured questionnaire. Results: Of the 856 respondents included in this study, 68.6% were female and 60.6% rated their health status as ‘good’ or ‘very good’. During the one month period prior to the study, 87.4% of the respondents encountered at least one minor ailment. The five most common minor ailments encountered were headache (58.1%), common cold (42.8%), sore throat (42.6%), cough (40.3%) and back pain (27.6%). The main actions taken were rest at home and self-medication. The most common drug used for the treatment of minor ailments was paracetamol (49% of the respondents). Other drugs were used by less than 10% of the respondents. The main source of information was from parents (63.7%), followed by doctors (59.9%), internet (57.9%), pharmacists (33.9%) and friends (33.5%). Conclusion: Headache is more common among university students compared to the general population. Further studies are required to understand the cause of headache among this population.

ABSTRAKLow Back Pain (LBP) adalah gangguan muskuloskletal dimana rasa nyeri dapat menurunkan produktivitas, mengganggu kehidupan sosial dan membuat penderita harus mendapatkan pengobatan. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah melihat pengaruh analgesik dalam menurunkan intensitas nyeri yang dirasakan penderita. Penelitian melibatkan 63 orang penderita dilakukan secara observasi dengan teknik wawancara menggunakan kuesioner yang telah tervalidasi. Pengolahan data memggunakan SPSS Versi 22 diketahui sebaran sosiodemografi penderita paling banyak pada rentang usia 34-41 tahun (22,2 %), wanita (65.1%), pendidikan SLTA (76.2%), pekerjaan IRT/Pensiunan (54%), diagnosa penyakit canal stenosis (19%) dan natrium diklofenak (87.3%) merupakan analgesik terbanyak yang digunakan. Hasil penelitian selanjutnya menunjukan natrium diklofenak dan parasetamol efektif dalam menurunkan intensitas nyeri dengan peningkatan respon pengobatan 24 jam secara bermakna masing-masing p 0.000<0.05 dan p 0.024<0.05 dan penurunan nilai nyeri masing-masing p 0.005<0.05 dan p 0.001<0.05. Kesimpulan penelitian ini adalah pemberian analgesik dapat menurunan nilai intensitas nyeri yang dirasakan, sehingga didapatkan kualitas hidup yang lebih baik bagi penderita LBP di Poliklinik Orthophedi RSUP.
