Knowledge and practice patterns of Intensive Care Unit nurses towards eye care in Chhattisgarh state

Abstract: Purpose:The aim of the study was to present the level of knowledge and practice patterns regarding exposure keratopathy in mechanically ventilated patients among Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nurses in Chhattisgarh state. Methods:A previously validated semi-structured questionnaire was administered in the ICU of six multispecialty hospitals in Chhattisgarh in 2014–2015. “…Vyas et al (2018) investigated EC knowledge and practice patterns of ICU nurses to determine their level of knowledge and practice pattern about exposure keratopathy in patients with mechanical ventilation. Although there was a high level of knowledge about EC in general, nurses had no appropriate practice pattern, and training programs are needed to improve nurses' EC knowledge and practice [ 18 ]. In a study on the EC knowledge and practice of nurses, Khalil et al (2019) also showed that although nurses have sufficient EC knowledge, they have poor EC practice [ 19 ].…”

“…Patients who are in a coma and need respiratory support in the intensive care unit (ICU) are extremely sensitive to various comorbidities, such as pressure ulcers, sepsis, aspiration pneumonia, and keratopathy (Alghamdi et al, 2018;Vyas et al, 2018). In addition, patients hospitalized in ICUs are generally treated with neuromuscular blockers, sedatives, and muscle relaxant agents due to the symptoms they experience.…”

“…Eye complications are reported to develop in 42% to 60% of intensive care patients (Alghamdi et al, 2018). It is not possible to fully close the eyes in 20.8% to 75% of intensive care patients under sedation, and keratopathy develops in 3.6% to 60% (Ebadi et al, 2017;Vyas et al, 2018). Exposure keratopathy is usually caused by inadequate closure of the eyelid, resulting in dryness of the lower half of the cornea.…”

“…The prospective study investigates the effect of body position on intraocular pressure (IOP), confirmed the prone position record highest pressure among both, investigated and healthy groups [7] . Although, there are many studies in the world focused on eye care in intensive care units, in Iraq the information on this subject is inadequate [1,2,8,9,12,14] . In Iraq also, literatures published about eye screening and care in many types of eye disease in public, there is no study yet, assess nurses' knowledge based on evidencebased practice toward eye care in ICUs [10] .…”
