Knowledge and Practice Regarding Vector Borne Diseases Among Urban Slum Dwellers of Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh.

Background: Mosquito borne diseases cause major public health problem in Kerala which causes major outbreak during post monsoon period. Objective: To assess the knowledge attitude and practice on mosquito borne diseases among people in a rural health and training centre in Thrissur. Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out from the month of January to May 2019 in the field practice area of rural health training centre, Amala Institute of Medical Sciences, Thrissur. 300 houses were selected for the study by systematic random sampling and semi structured questionnaire was filled by an adult member of the family. Data was analysed in Microsoft Excel 2010 and SPSS version 21. Result: All the 274 respondents in the study were aware that mosquito borne diseases are a serious problem.90.9% knew dengue as a mosquito borne disease but only 2.6% are aware that mosquito bite in day time, only 3.2% knew that filaria is transmitted by mosquito. Majority believe that mosquito breeds in drains. Most of the respondents use mosquito nets for personal protection against mosquito. Health education serve as the main source of information for majority of participants. Conclusion: The study shows good knowledge, positive attitude and practices on mosquito borne diseases.

Community Perception on Malaria in Urban Area of Tumkur

Background: Malaria is the parasitic disease that affects people around the world with highest rate of morbidity and mortality. There is a need to intensify efforts at grassroots levels to reach the most vulnerable people with advanced health care and technologies Methodology: A community based cross sectional study was conducted in the urban slum area of Tumkur. All individuals aged more than 20 years of age, permanent residents, who were present on the day of survey were included in the study. Multistage random sampling method used to select participants, semi-structured questionnaire using interview method used to collect data. Results: A total of 112 families were interviewed during the study. Among respondents 56.3% were females. Majority were in the age group of 20-39 years (50%). Regarding housing condition 67.9% of the houses were pukka while 18.3% of the houses. Majority of participants (76.7%) knew about malaria. Among them 60.5% said malaria is a communicable. Conclusion: The study revealed that perception about malaria was satisfactory and there was varied perception about causes, spread of disease, and source of infection and prevention of malaria disease.
