Introduction Anthrax is an infectious bacterial disease transmitted from infected animal to human by direct or indirectcontact with their products like hides or wool. The most efficient ways of anthrax infection preventions are vaccination of livestock, surveillance, and proper disposal of livestock carcasses in domestic herd.Recently, anthrax infection in humans has been reported from several districts spreadcountrywide and becomes a major public health problem of animals-humans in Amhara region (the study area).Objective This study aimed at determining knowledge of anthrax infection prevention and its associated factors among livestock owners in Sekotazuria district.Method Community based cross-sectional quantitative study was conducted from April to May, 2018, at Sekotazuria district, Northeast Ethiopia. A total of 844 live-stoke owners were selected from Sekotazuria district using simple random sampling technique. Data were collected using a structured self-administered questionnaire and data were cleaned, coded, and entered into Epi-info version 3.5.3, and transferred into SPSS version 20 for further statistical analysis. A p-value of less than 0.05 at multiple logistic regression analysis was considered statistically significant.Results The study revealed that good knowledge of anthrax prevention among livestock owners was 55.8% (95%CI: 54.2, 57.4%). According to multivariable logistic regression analysis, secondary and above educational level[AOR=2.97, 95% CI: 1.07, 8.20], age range of 42 – 80 [AOR=1.47, 95% CI: 1.04, 2.07], and health education about anthrax [AOR=4.25, 95% CI: 2.51, 7.17]were found significantly associated with good knowledge of anthrax infection prevention.Conclusion More than half of livestock owners at SekotaZuria District had good knowledge towards anthrax infection prevention, education level in secondary and above,respondents age category 42-80 years, and health education about anthrax were factors associated with knowledge of anthrax infection prevention. Therefore, health education about anthrax shall be strengthening.

Brucellosis awareness and knowledge in communities worldwide: A systematic review and meta-analysis of 79 observational studies

Background Brucellosis is regarded as a major zoonotic infection worldwide. Awareness and knowledge of brucellosis among occupational workers is considered an important aspect of brucellosis control in both humans and animals. The aim of this study was to explore the distributions of the pooled awareness level and the knowledge level of the disease worldwide. Methods A meta-analysis was carried out to obtain pooled brucellosis awareness levels and knowledge levels of respondents regarding the zoonotic nature of brucellosis, mode of brucellosis transmission, and brucellosis symptoms in animals and humans. The analysis was conducted and reported in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-analyses guidelines. Results A total of seventy-nine original articles reporting the brucellosis awareness levels of in populations from 22 countries were assessed. The total pooled awareness level of brucellosis was 55.5%, and the pooled awareness levels regarding the zoonotic nature of brucellosis, mode of brucellosis transmission, signs of human brucellosis and signs of animal brucellosis were 37.6%, 35.9%, 41.6%, and 28.4% respectively. The pooled awareness level was higher than the brucellosis-related knowledge level. Subgroup analyses showed that no obvious differences in brucellosis awareness levels between high-risk populations in Asia and Africa. Health workers (including human health workers and veterinarians) had the greatest overall awareness and knowledge of human brucellosis. The overall awareness levels and knowledge levels of livestock owners (farmers) and herders were higher than those of dairy farmers and abattoir workers. In addition, awareness and knowledge levels were higher among people who were involved in bovine, caprine and ovine animal production or in caprine and ovine animal production than among people who were involved in only bovine animal production. Conclusions Insufficient awareness and knowledge of brucellosis were observed in the original studies conducted mainly in Asia and Africa. Interventions to improve public knowledge about brucellosis are urgently needed.

Consciousness of Dairy Farmers about Rabies an Oldest Zoonosis

Background: The study was carried out to assess the consciousness of dairy farmers about rabies as an oldest zoonosis. Methods: Using the simple random sampling method, 180 dairy farmers from 36 villages of 6 talukas of Panchmahals and Mahisagar districts of Gujarat state (India) were selected. Result: The majority of dairy farmers (90.56%) had high to very high level of consciousness about rabies. The majority of dairy farmers had medium to high level of knowledge (72.22%), high to very high level of sensitivity (91.11%) and favorable to most favorable attitude (95.55%) towards the control of rabies. Path analysis show the maximum positive direct effect had exerted by scientific orientation and mass media exposure and age exerted maximum negative direct effect. Economic motivation and extension participation exerted maximum indirect positive effects. Dairy farmers can enhance their consciousness about rabies through participation in different extension activities with using mass media, internet and other psychological variables. The findings of this study would serve as a guideline for researchers, training institutions, planners, extension agencies and concerned organizations in the formation of effective realistic training programmes to impart consciousness amongst the dairy farmers about rabies and other zoonoses.
