Knowledge, attitude and practices of pig farmers post African swine fever outbreaks in Ogun and Oyo states of Nigeria

Abstract: The experience during African swine fever (ASF) virus outbreak can be devastating. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude and practise among pig farmers to avoiding resurgence of ASF outbreaks in Oyo and Ogun States of Nigeria where ASF outbreaks had been earlier reported. Non participatory observations and participatory interviews using pre-tested structured questionnaire were conducted in 2016 among 92 consenting pig farms post-ASF outbreak. The study showed that one in two of pig farms studied h… Show more

“…On the African swine fever reaction, less than 50 is the highest which is 63.27% while less than ten ( 10) is the lowest is 1.63%. The role of quarantine in any livestock farm is expected to be taken seriously more so in stocking and restocking activities at postoutbreak of any disease (Omowon et al, 2019).…”

“…The activities of farm attendants play a signi cant role to the spread of ASF. Sharing of farm attendants is a known practice in Nigeria, particularly in smallholder pig farming clusters (Fasina et al, 2012;Omowon et al, 2019). Training farm attendants on proper biosecurity protocols, regular monitoring, and reinforcing these protocols will enhance farm biosecurity.…”

“…Exemplifying this, in Uganda where ASF is endemic, disease prevention and biosecurity have been increasingly targeted in many trainings and development programmes during the last decades, including a manual specifically targeting ASF control in the smallholder pig sector [ 153 ]. In response to the increased understanding of the human dimension of ASF epidemiology, several studies have investigated smallholders’ knowledge, awareness, perceptions and practices concerning biosecurity, often referred to as KAP studies (knowledge, attitude, practices) [ 75 , 76 , 79 , 113 , 154 ]. These studies in resource-limited settings generally report that implementation of biosecurity is far from fully executed but come to diverging conclusions about what is hindering implementation [ 155 , 156 , 157 , 158 ].…”
