“…In the past, a few studies in the literature have analyzed the prevalence of NDs in large samples. However, these studies considered mixed samples from surgical and medical settings (D'Agostino et al, 2017;D'Agostino et al, 2019;Feng & Chang, 2015;Halloran & Kiley, 1987;O'Brien-Pallas et al, 2010;Park et al, 2006;Welton & Halloran, 2005).…”

Other studies on this topic only considered specialized surgical settings (da Rocha et al, 2006; Ferreira et al, 2014; Flanagan & Jones, 2009; Moreira et al, 2013; Nunes do Nascimento et al, 2020), smaller samples, or unspecified SNTs (Tuncbilek & Senol Celik, 2016).…”

“…A shortage of solid knowledge exists regarding the prevalence and distribution of patient needs among clinical settings and diseases. Only a few studies have been based on large hospital databases that included nursing diagnostic data (Halloran & Kiley 1987, Rosenthal et al 1995, Welton & Halloran 2005, Park et al 2006, O'Brien-Pallas et al 2010, Feng & Chang 2015. Nonetheless, studies such as these are central to improving the knowledge on the epidemiology of NDs.…”

“…NMDS from other countries have also been used to answer comparable analysis questions, such as to illustrate the differences in patient populations and variations in nursing activities [ 34 ], to describe the frequency of intravenous medications [ 35 ], to support the implementation of measures regarding quality assurance and patient safety [ 36 ], or to describe the characteristics of hospitalized older patients with dementia [ 37 ].…”
