Knowledge of Constituent Ingredients in Enteral Nutrition Formulas Can Make a Difference in Patient Response to Enteral Feeding

Abstract: Enteral feeding is considered the preferred method for providing a complete or supplemental source of nutrition to patients. Enteral formulas (EFs) are traditionally assessed from general information provided by the manufacturer such as caloric density, percentage of macronutrients, and micronutrients to meet the Recommended Dietary Allowance. Sometimes labeling information highlights particular ingredients to indicate specific properties at a metabolic or nutrition level. However, it is necessary to review th… Show more

“…15,19 A recent prospective, randomized, double-blind study found that patients who received commercial enteral formulas with low FODMAP content had decreased diarrhea and improved nutrition status in individuals predisposed to gastrointestinal problems. 1,20 There is no information in the literature regarding the content of FODMAP in homemade enteral formulas, which are prescribed in hospital discharge guidelines for patients who proceed with home ENT. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the nutrition composition and to quantify the content of FODMAP in homemade enteral formulas, commonly prescribed for home use after hospital discharge.…”

“…27,28 Choosing an enteral diet should be based on the EN consumer's clinical and medical status, as well as ingredients. 29 CEFs are typically categorized based on nutrition composition. Enteral formula review articles that detail CEF ingredients and their potential effects on health and tube-feeding tolerance have been publushed.…”

“…However, the eventual alterations in absorption are rarely considered and are difficult to monitor, yet may lead to relevant deficiencies of both macro- and micronutrients. The impact of proton pump inhibitors on the digestibility of nutrients, the impact of diet composition on absorption, and the secretion of digestive enzymes during continuous EN are questions that are poorly studied and understood [ 28 ].…”
