Background: Recent evidence provides the facts behind the perceptions about women researchers participating in health research (HR). Women scientists as almost half of active researchers in HR fields have important and fundamental role. The present study aimed to analyses the situation of women participation in HR of Iran. Methods: The present study comprised three complementary phases intended to identify and analysis challenges and problems of women participation in health research in Iran (2021-22). Following a review phase, using the content analysis approach through semi-structured interviews data gathered from key stakeholders of health research. At final step, aimed to aggregate and conclude the main key findings, through an expert panel all of the results analyzed to clarify the main messages of the study, focus on reflection to the target group. Results: The results reveal considerable gender differences in research contribution between Iranian men and women. The need for legal infrastructure and support for the active participation of women in HR was the main extracted point of study. The need for transparent documentation and implementation of related research that demonstrates the necessary challenges and gaps was another major point. Conclusion: Findings may help illuminate policy makings to promote participation of women in the country research. The optimal management of HR require facilities can play an important role in improving the quality and quantity of health studies and achieving scientific competitive positions at the regional and global levels.

Background: Obesity has increasingly become a health threat in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries. This study aimed to investigate the scientific publications on obesity in the MENA countries during 2008-2020. Methods: A longitudinal analysis of 13 years (2008-2020) of bibliographic data from obesity-related articles was performed. Web of Science core collection (WoS) was searched for bibliographic data. The bibliometric indicators including overall productivity and collaboration along with the prevalence of obesity and socioeconomic status were used to assess and compare the context of obesity research efforts in the MENA region. Results: The overall obesity-related articles of the MENA countries cumulated to 23680 publications. The MENA region accounted for a 6.5% global publication share in obesity research. Turkey contributed the highest rate of total publications (n=6162) followed by Iran (n=5302) and Israel (n=2847). Iran and Turkey had the lowest rates of international collaborations. The overall obesity research was not significantly associated with socio-demographic index (SDI) measure (r=-0.26, P=0.27). No significant association was found between Gross National Income (GNI) per capita and the overall production of obesity research (r=0.41, P=0.08). Additionally, obesity research was not significantly associated with the prevalence of obesity in the countries (r=0.24, P=0.30). Conclusion: This study observed an increased share of scientific productivity in the field of obesity from the MENA countries. Neither SDI, GNI per capita, nor obesity prevalence was not significantly associated with the overall productivity of the region.

What Insights Can We Gain from the Scientometric Analysis of Scientific Publications Related to Multiple Sclerosis?

Background: Bibliometrics is one of the credible methods of evaluating scientific publications and research output. This is the first study in the multiple sclerosis (MS) field that can guide researchers and policy-makers in contributing more to MS. Objectives: The main purpose of this study is to conduct a bibliometric analysis and visualization of multiple sclerosis scientific products of the 17 Middle East countries during 1900 - 2020. Methods: Data from January 1, 1900, to December 31, 2020, were searched in the Web of Science database. Research productivity was evaluated by considering the country, year, number of publications, and time trend of these publications. Co-word and co-authorship analyses were done, and top authors, journals, active institutions, and country contributions to MS research were identified. Results: Middle Eastern countries produced 5.5% of the total number of MS research worldwide. Turkey (29.18%), Iran (23.54%), and Egypt (13.066%) had the top positions. King Saud University as a research center, Baser, Kemal Husnu Can as an author, and the Multiple Sclerosis Journal as a scientific journal, respectively, with a total of 1,582 (4.26%), 360 (0.97%) and 1,172 (3.15%) publications had the highest research productivities. Conclusions: Accurate policy-making in research centers, prioritizing research topics, promoting journals, and making more international collaboration can decrease the gap in research on MS and increase its quality and quantity. Despite rising trends in research results, more strategic planning and cooperation between researchers are needed for regional advancement in the field.
